Confirmation is the third of the three Sacraments of Initiation which also include Baptism and Holy Eucharist. By the Anointing with Chrism and the Laying On of Hands, Confirmation strengthens our faith through the action of the Holy Spirit. We are enriched with the special strength of the Holy Spirit who transform us from whom we are to whom we will be.
Through Baptism all were given a mission from Jesus Christ, i.e., defending and spreading our faith through our lifetime. To better know and understand that mission, Confirmation provides the "tools", the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, to sustain us on our journey in faith. These "tools" are wisdom, courage, understanding, knowlege of God's purpose, right judgement, reverence, and awe in the Lord. They perfect our bond in the church and propel us on a grace-filled journey through life. During the training for the Sacrament participants will come to understand these Gifts and appreciate their meaning.
Although most Catholics are confirmed while in Middle School or High School, the Sacrament of Confirmation is always available for adults who, for whatever reason, were not confirmed then. Through Adult Confirmation, Christian initiation is completed. Confirmation also directly aligns the recipient with the apostles who received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
